As part of Zayed University’s objectives to ensure early deduction and promote health awareness and education, a comprehensive health screening was conducted for students on Zayed University’s Dubai campus recently.
The initiative kicked off in collaboration with the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

The health screening, which has started on March 15 received active participations from more than 300 students.

The eight-day event conducted free screenings for vision, hearing, skin, hair, BMI, blood sugar, blood pressure and provided many medical and psychological consultations for ZU students.

“DHA has been undertaking several health initiatives across its wellness centers, one of which is located at Zayed University. It is imperative to identify healthy people, who may be at increased risk of a disease or condition. Health screening can offer them information, further tests and appropriate treatment to reduce their risk or any other complications that might affect their academic performance negatively,” Dr. Shamsa Bin Hammad, Head of Wellness Centers, Department of Community Health within the DHA primary healthcare sector, said.

The Wellness Center at Zayed University, which was established in 2007, is well-equipped and being on-campus, the center has several benefits such as providing medical assistance for students who are unwell, first-aid as well as promoting health education.

Dr. Nesreen Ghazi, Physician at the Wellness Center, also praised the role of Zayed University in supporting significant programs that address student health conditions that affect the academic performance positively.
“Health screening is vital. It involves the use of tests, physical examinations or other procedures to detect disease early on. Early detection, followed by treatment and good control of the condition can result in better outcomes, and lowers the risk of serious complications,” Dr. Nisreen said.

The health screening was opened for students, who are between 18- 20 years of age.

“Most of female students were curious to start with their skin test; however, they had to pass by all stations and conduct all required tests,” Ebtisam Saleh, nurse at Zayed University Wellness Center and organizer of the health screening program, said.

The event was also organized in association with the Department of Students Affairs at Zayed Unicersity and attended by Dr, Fatima Al Darmaki, Assistant Provost for Students Affairs and Fathiya Al Khameri, Director of Students Affairs in Dubai campus.

“Our top priority is the safety of our students and the community we serve. We believe that good medical condition boosts academic performance,” Al Khameri said.

The center also helps students who are suffering from obesity and weight loss programs by advocating healthy nutrition and advising regular physical exercise.
