Frequently Asked Questions

AWARDS

Q:  How are the Shaikha Fatima Honor Society award winners chosen?
A:  Shaikha Fatima Honor Society nominations were requested from each college per campus.  Recipients must possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.6/4.0 and demonstrate the exceptional intellectual and professional qualities described in the Zayed University Learning Outcomes (ZULOs), and the Major Learning outcomes (MALOs) of each College.  If you are a Shaikha Fatima Award recipient, the reader card with your name indicates this, and you would have received a letter from the Dean of Student Affairs.

Q:  How are the President’s Award winners chosen?
A:  Two President’s Award recipients are chosen, one from each campus.  Recipients must achieve the highest cumulative grade point average and demonstrate the qualities and capabilities that ZU strives to teach to its graduates, specifically exceptional achievement in the ZULOs and MALO.  Recipients will be announced at the graduation ceremony.

Q: How are the Honors List Graduates chosen?
A:  Students who are designated as Honors graduates have achieved a minimum of a 3.6 cumulative grade point average at Zayed University.

GOWNS

Q: What are the gown colors?
A:  Black with college colors on the trim:   EDU – Blue, COM – Red, BUS– Green, IT– Orange, A&S – White, FS -- Maroon

Q:  My gown needs to be tailored.  What do I do?
A:  Graduates are responsible for bringing their graduation gowns to the tailor.  Only alterations for proper length and width can be made.  Your gown must remain very much like when you received it or you will be asked to change at the ceremony.  Zayed University is not providing the tailoring service.

Q:  How do I wear the stole (or “hood”) that came with my graduation gown?
A:  The “V” shaped end of the stole (worn over your gown and on your shoulders) goes on your front, while the tassels hang down your back.

Q:  Do I need to wear a sheyla?
A:  Graduates can choose to wear a sheyla or they can go without.  Sheylas are not provided with the graduation gown so if you wish to wear one, you will need to supply your own.  You must wear the gown and hood provided so you will all appear to be the same.

Q: What do I wear under my gown?
A: White lights may be used during the ceremony so we suggest that you wear dark clothing beneath your graduation gowns.   Also, there are many stairs so be cautious when choosing what shoes to wear.  Please leave any additional items such as purses at home, as you will not be able to wear them during the ceremony and they will be limited facilities to store personal items.

OTHER

Q:  Will there be a photographer at the National Theater?  I would like to have a picture of me, my friends and/or family members on graduation day.
A:  Please note that personal cameras are not allowed in the Theatre.  Graduates who wish to have a photograph to commemorate their special day will be able to have their picture taken with their family and/or friends by a female professional photographer who will be at the National Theatre.  This service is available at your expense.  Fees must be paid on site.  The regular cost is Dhs. 30 for a 5X7 photograph.
