Zayed University celebrates cultural diversity

An array of art works, delicious cuisines, and traditional drinks were displayed at ethnic stalls and pavilions depicting cultural heritage, as part of Zayed University’s (ZU) celebration of the Cultural Festival which was held in recently in Abu Dhabi and Dubai campuses.
The Japanese pavilion was an eye-catcher for most of the students. The club has so far more than 50 students enrolled in it and has been so active since its inception.
Fathema Al Braiki, a junior Zayed University student and the president of the Japanese Club, said: “Our club was established to introduce the Japanese history, language, and culture for members of the university community who have an interest in Japan. We hold a variety of social and cultural activities throughout the year. We provide opportunities for students to understand the Japanese language and traditions in a very friendly and casual environment with Japanese food and drinks served.”
Students were encouraged and supported to work beyond their normal event preparations and many of them succeeded in working with external entities to support the event and bring them on campus in an attempt to enhance cultural activities in the pavilions.
Students were taught the art of sushi making by a group of Japanese delegates from the Embassy of Japan, which has collaborated with Zayed University, to celebrate the Cultural Festival.
The event also had different colorful booths, which introduced the history, culture and traditions of Marshall Islands, South Africa, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Switzerland and Palestine.
With China being one of the leading economic powers in the world today, the Confucius Institute was a significant part of the festival. The institute offers Chinese language courses to Zayed University students and Abu Dhabi community at large.
Around 12 cultural clubs have participated in Zayed University’s Cultural Festival in Dubai campus.
The psychology club engaged students in a variety of experiments. Other participating cultural clubs were: The accounting, Korean, Japanese, Saudi, harmony and health clubs.
